2006 New Orleans Mission Trip

In April 2006, A group from The Gathering went to New Orleans on a mission trip to help people recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. Pastor Ron Vanderwell, Jessica Simmons, Jeff Caldwell, and Ron Richards spent the week gutting houses. This involved hauling out soggy debris, shoveling thick mud off of the floors, and tearing out a fixtures and sheetrock until nothing but the studs were left standing. The pictures show the devastation caused by Katrina. 

Everyone was stunned by the destruction they saw: mile after mile of abandoned, devastated, neighborhoods, untouched by any restoration. They heard repeatedly from the locals here that it is the Christian volunteers that have really gotten things moving, not necessarily the Red Cross or FEMA. It is clear that the thousands of church volunteers on trips like this have made a strong impact in the area.
